Odds and Ends Before Break

A few reminders for the last day before break:

1. Don’t forget to return your child's signed report card envelope. Make sure you take the report card out before returning.
2. Tomorrow is a class T-shirt day so send them in their Stanford shirt!
3. Students were given Chicken Dinner tickets today in their mailboxes. The dinner is January 20th. Any sold/unsold tickets can be returned to school.
4. The all school panoramic photo is displayed at the school. Laminated photos are available for $16. Make checks payable to Lifetouch.
5. We are taking orders for the 2011/2012 CA Yearbook. Cost is $18 per book. Orders are due by January 11.
6. We made (or attempted to make) model volcanoes in class today. The salt/flour/water dough consistency came out a little more sticky for some of us than planned. That being said, if the students want to try again at home over break the recipe is down below. I will send little cups (to act as the conduit of the volcano) home with kids who want to try it again. Other than the dough, you just need vinegar and baking soda to create the explosion. :)

Enjoy your break!

Mrs. Roth

Dough Recipe
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water (give or take depending on the consistency)

December 12-21

This Week's Academics
MUR - This week we will finish working with the story "Tuesday of the Other June" with a few character and retell related activities. Along with the story we will work out of our Wordly Wise books which focus on vocabulary and also out of our Analytical Grammar books where we have already started working with nouns, proper nouns,  adjectives, articles, and pronouns, prepositions, and action verbs.
Spelling homework is due Friday.

This week's spelling words are homonyms. they are words that have the same spelling and same pronunciation but have different meanings. Example: bat - One means the stick you use to hit the ball in baseball, and the other is a flying animal.
MUM - This week we will wrap up adding and subtracting decimals and review for the interim that we will take on Thursday or Friday. Next week we will start to work on multiplying and dividing decimals.

Science - We will continue to work through our geology unit. This week were are learning all about rocks and minerals along with weathering and erosion. Students were given a study guide on Monday for the up coming quiz. The quiz is scheduled for Monday, December 19th.

Writing - This week we will be working on the 6+1 trait of VOICE. Students will look at the purpose and audience of a piece of writing and learn how to use voice in order to reach the audience appropriately. Students will be writing their own version of "The Three Little Pigs" using great voice.

Read Aloud - We are reading the Core Knowledge Novel Robinson Crusoe.

Castle Projects

Please make arrangements to pick up your child's at-home history projects this week. The projects turned up great, but are taking up a lot of our classroom space. Coming in about 1/2 hour before or after school would be a great pick up time!
Thanks for your promptness!

Reading Rodeo and Math Fluency

Just a reminder - November reading rodeo calendars are due by tomorrow along with math fluency calendars (for Mrs. Roth's MUM class only!).

Snow Gear Alert!

Just a reminder – now that there is snow on the ground and the temperatures are falling, please make sure that your child comes to school with the whole kit and caboodle: snow pants, winter coat, gloves/mittens, hat, and boots.

Also, it is very helpful if you label all your child’s gear – there are many pairs of snow pants, gloves, etc. that are black and look the same!

Thanks and have a great weekend!
