February 27 - March 2

This Week's Academics
MUR -This week we will wrap up the literature circles that we have been working on the last several weeks.
Students are grouped according to their STEP levels. Mrs. Nett, our student teacher, and I will each be leading two groups of students. I will be reading James and the Giant Peach with my groups, and Mrs. Nett will be reading Because of Winn-Dixie with her groups. We will be leaving the books at school since we have borrowed them from several different resources. If you would like to check out the book from your library to have at home, that would be great!
History - This week we will be finishing reading chapters 9 and 10 and then be reviewing and taking our first quiz on Wednesday .
The at-home project was assigned last week and will be due March 19th, the Monday after spring break.
Writing - This week we are wrapping up our poetry unit and working on the 2011  Charter School Essays. Every year we write essays that we submit to the Center for School Change. The winners get to read their essays at the capital. We are hoping for a winner in 4th grade this year!
Read Aloud - We continue to read Sherlock Holmes this week.

MUM - This week we will be reviewing some concepts that we didn't do so well on this last interim assessment which include fractions, decimals, model drawing, and classifying triangles.
We will also be taking the first round of the math MCA next Wednesday and Thursday. This year our students are allowed to take the math MCA twice. we will be taking it again in the middle of May. The best score will be taken as their final score.

With this unit, we will be doing an at home project. More details to come soon.

Writing - Last week we started our poetry unit. Students are learning about all kinds on poems, including bio-poems, haiku, limericks, free verse, shape poems, and many more. Students will be responsible for creating a final poetry book of their final drafts by the end of the unit.

Read Aloud - We are just getting into the beginning of Sherlock Holmes this week.

MUM - We have started our unit on geometry. Last week we worked on area and perimeter of rectangles and squares and this week we will continue to work on those skills. We will also work on finding the area and perimeter of composite figures that are made up of two or more rectangles or squares.
We also have our third interim of the year coming  up this Thursday. We will review all the concepts and skills that we have learned over the first part of the year in order to get ready for this test.
