College T-Shirts Oct. 31
On Thursday, October 31st students should wear their college t-shirts as we have our OSA in the afternoon.

What we are doing this week:
In MUR...
This week spelling homework will be assigned Monday and is due Friday.
In grammar, we will be reviewing helping verbs in grammar and also talk about verb forms.
We will be focusing on folktales this week. Students will learn what a folktale is and be able to distinguish between the different types of folktales including myths, legends, fairy tales, fables, and tall tales. Students will read a variety of folktales and then compare and contrast two of the stories.
In MUM...
Homework will be sent home Monday and due Friday. Please continue to work with your child on their basic facts at home.
This week we will continue working with multi-digit multiplication and move into long division.
We will also be taking the first interim assessment of the year. This assessment will cover all of the skills and concepts that we have worked on so far this year.
Even if your child works 5-10 minutes a night on facts they will be successful in class each day. Thank you for your continued support at home!
In History...
This week we will continue the Europe in the Middle ages unit reading chapters 11-21. Next week will be the second and final quiz for this unit and then students will switch back to science with Mrs. Slavik.
In Writing...
This week we will continue to work on word choice. Students will write bio-poems using million dollar words to describe themselves and will be given time to type their poems in the computer lab. We will have a publishing party to share and celebrate our final drafts of our poems.

Mrs. Puckett will continue to read the book Jackie and Me by Dan Gutman.

October 21-25
What we are doing this week:
In MUR...
This week we will not have spelling homework but we continue to work in class on the long -a spelling pattern.
This week we will also be working with linking verbs in grammar.
We will be reading the Jr. Great Books story Thank You Ma'am by Langston Hughes this week and working on developing questions based on the story. On Friday we will have a class seminar were students will discuss their thoughts and opinions about the story.
I have encouraged the students to go to the library and get the second book of the series if they enjoyed the first book - which all the students did! The second book is called The Genius Files: Never Say Genius.

This week we are continuing to work on our unit, Europe in the Middle Ages. The first quiz will be FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25th!
***Also, there will be an AT-HOME project that accompanies this unit. This will be explained in class on Monday, October 21 and will be due on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7th! ***
In Writing...
This week we will be starting our 6 + 1 Trait of Writing: Word Choice. Student's will be learning to use the thesaurus to come up with "Million Dollar Words" and create tribute poems about themselves.
Read Aloud...
Mrs. Puckett will continue to read the book Jackie and Me by Dan Gutman.

Week of October 14-15
We only have school Monday and Tuesday this week.

This week we will not have spelling homework due to the short week. In class we will be finishing up our book The Genius Files. We will take a short quiz on the book on Tuesday based on the skills that we have worked on throughout the story.

Wear Red!
Cologne Academy will be wearing red on Oct. 23rd
to join the nation in support for anti-bullying awareness. Students will be
allowed to wear red on top, must be in uniform on bottom, (with shoes and socks
J)
If students do not chose to wear red on top they must be in
uniform.

In MUR...
This week students will have spelling homework working with long -A patterns in accented syllables. Students are responsible for complete the homework and returning it on Friday.
In class we are continuing to read The Genius Files which is part of the action and adventure genre. We are continuing to learn about plot, character traits and feelings, and elements of an action and adventure story.
In MUM...
This week we will continue chapter three which is all about whole number multiplication and division. We will start working with three digit by one digit multiplication.
Homework is assigned on Monday and is due Friday!

In History...
Mrs. Roth's class is now back in history. On Wednesday we started the Europe in the Middle Ages unit. It will take us several weeks to get through this unit, as it is 21 chapters long! There will be a quiz half way through, and another at the end.
In Writing...
This week we will be writing a few final paragraphs and then will move on to working with the 6 + 1 trait of writing - word choice.
Read Aloud...
We are reading The Underneath by Kathi Appelt. The books is very close to being done, which we are all sad about. What a GREAT book.
