Odds and Ends Before Break

A few reminders for the last day before break:

1. Don’t forget to return your child's signed report card envelope. Make sure you take the report card out before returning.
2. Tomorrow is a class T-shirt day so send them in their Stanford shirt!
3. Students were given Chicken Dinner tickets today in their mailboxes. The dinner is January 20th. Any sold/unsold tickets can be returned to school.
4. The all school panoramic photo is displayed at the school. Laminated photos are available for $16. Make checks payable to Lifetouch.
5. We are taking orders for the 2011/2012 CA Yearbook. Cost is $18 per book. Orders are due by January 11.
6. We made (or attempted to make) model volcanoes in class today. The salt/flour/water dough consistency came out a little more sticky for some of us than planned. That being said, if the students want to try again at home over break the recipe is down below. I will send little cups (to act as the conduit of the volcano) home with kids who want to try it again. Other than the dough, you just need vinegar and baking soda to create the explosion. :)

Enjoy your break!

Mrs. Roth

Dough Recipe
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water (give or take depending on the consistency)

Just a reminder – now that there is snow on the ground and the temperatures are falling, please make sure that your child comes to school with the whole kit and caboodle: snow pants, winter coat, gloves/mittens, hat, and boots.

Also, it is very helpful if you label all your child’s gear – there are many pairs of snow pants, gloves, etc. that are black and look the same!

Welcome Back!

August 2011
Dear fourth grade parents/guardians:

I can hardly believe that it is already time to start getting ready for another year at Cologne Academy.  The first few years have been a great success, and I am so excited to continue that success with this year’s incoming fourth graders!

A little bit about me…
This year will be my fourth year of teaching at Cologne Academy.  I graduated from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2006 and did my student teaching in St. Paul.  I was lucky enough to be hired at Cologne Academy the first year it opened and have been part of the growing process, which has been amazing.  I am so proud of what we have accomplished and look forward to continued success in the future.

I live in Plymouth with my husband Brian and my three year old dog Cali.  When I am not teaching, I love to travel to warm, tropical destinations and also love to spend time at the cabin in the summer months.  I am a big Minnesota sports fan and especially love to watch the Twins and the Wild.

There is so much to learn in fourth grade!  Here are some of the highlights:

In reading we will be learning about a variety of types of literature, including fantasy, fiction, nonfiction, plays, expository, tall tales, poetry, and myths.  Students will continue to learn key concepts in word structure, vocabulary, and grammar along with weekly spelling tests.

In writing we will be working on descriptive, narrative, informative, and persuasive writing along with learning how to properly write friendly letters, thank you notes, and poetry.

In math we will review key concepts from third grade, and also explore new areas such as fractions, decimals, tables and graphs, multi-digit multiplication and long division, perimeter and area, and geometry.

In history we will learn about the world’s mountain ranges, Europe in the Middle Ages, The Dynasties of China, The American Revolution, The Unites States Constitution, and African Kingdoms.

In science we will learn about meteorology, geology, the human body (heart and the lungs), and chemistry.

In both history and science there will be several at home projects that students will do that tie into the unit that we are working on.

Along with the core subject areas listed above, students will have specials each week that include music, physical education, Spanish, art, and media.

Enjoy the last weeks of summer!  I can’t wait to meet everyone and get the 20011-2012 school year rolling!

Happy Summer!

As we start summer break, it is important to remember that learning shouldn’t stop just because school does. As we have seen in the past, student NWEA scores tend to fall back several points in the fall when students have had three months off.  In order to curb this trend, I encourage you to provide your child with weekly opportunities to continue and extend their learning.

That being said, below I have made a list of great websites that you can utilize over the summer with your child. If the internet it not an option, Barnes and Noble has a wide selection of student workbooks in every subject area that you can purchase and use on a daily basis to keep up the concepts and skills that they learned throughout the year.
