Conferences

Expo Information

The following is information about what the 4th graders will be preforming on Thursday night. Please drop off your child at the Community Center at 6:30 (10 minutes prior to their performance) where we will meet in the conference room directly to the east when you enter the main doors. 

This night is intended for families to check out and explore the Science Fair projects, the art projects, and the Spanish performances. Please be responsible for supervising your child at all times.  Teachers will only be supervising during the 10 minutes before the Spanish performance.

Boys will wear solid color shirt, pants, and a straw hat.

Girls will wear a solid color top, puffy skirt, flat sandals and their hair up with a flower.

January 30 - February 3

This Week's Academics
MUR - This week we will be reading the story The Nightingale by Hans Christian Andersen. We will be working on putting the pieces of retell together. These pieces include character, setting, and plot. Along with the story we will work out of our Wordly Wise books which focus on vocabulary. This week we will continue working on Lesson 11. We will also work out of our Analytical Grammar books where we have just about finished our workbooks! We will still continue to work on identifying nouns, proper nouns, articles, adjectives, pronouns, prepositions, verbs, and adverbs within sentences.
Spelling homework is due Friday.

MUM - We have started out unit on geometry. This week we will continue to work on measuring angles using a protractor and move into perpendicular and parallel lines, 90 degree turns, and identifying and estimating angles.  
Science - Last week we started our human body unit. We will be learning all about the heart - how blood flows through the heart, blood types, the function of the heart, and how to keep our hearts healthy. We will also learn about the lungs - the function of the lungs, how they are connected to the heart, and the different parts of the lungs. This unit will take approximately two weeks to complete. Students were given a workbook which already contains the study guide at the back. This will make it easy for students to study along the way! 
Writing - This week we will be wrapping up our ABC Autobiographies and be presenting them to the class. Next we will start our poetry unit.
Read Aloud - We are currently reading The Giver. Next, we will get back into one of the Core Knowledge Classics that we have left.

January 16-20

This Week's Academics
MUR - This week we will be reading the story Chin Yu Min and the Ginger Cat by Jennifer Armstrong. We will be working on putting the pieces of retell together. These pieces include character, setting, and plot. Along with the story we will work out of our Wordly Wise books which focus on vocabulary. This week we will continue working on Lesson 10. We will also work out of our Analytical Grammar books where we have just about finished our workbooks! We will still continue to work on identifying nouns, proper nouns, articles, adjectives, pronouns, prepositions, verbs, and adverbs within sentences. Spelling homework is due Friday.
MUM - We will continue to work on algebra this week. We will be working specifically with order of operation and number patterns.
History - This week we will continue to work on the Dynasties of China unit. The unit has a total of ten chapters and we will be spending the next two and a half weeks working through these chapters. The quiz will be on all ten chapters and will be given on Monday the 23rd. The study guide will go home on Monday the 16th. 
Writing - This week we are starting a new writing project. Students will be writing autobiographies about their lives. They will be creating a final project using Power Point and will present these to the class.
Read Aloud - We are taking a break from our 4th grade Core Knowledge novels and reading the book The Twits by Roald Dahl.

February Conferences

As the next round of conferences quickly approach, please be aware that they will look a bit different this final round.

Grades 3-8 teachers will be offering conference time slots for students who are in their MUM and MUR classes. That being said, if you still feel the need to meet with me, even if I don't have your child for MUM or MUR, please feel free to schedule a time.

February conferences will be held Wednesday, February 8th from 7AM-10AM & 4PM-8PM and Thursday, February 9th from 4PM– 8 PM. Please note the student late start on Wednesday February 8th.

MUR - This week we will be reading a expository piece called The Forty-Niners. We will work on predicting, summarizing, main idea, author's purpose, and context clues. Along with the story we will work out of our Wordly Wise books which focus on vocabulary. This week we will continue working on Lesson 9. We will also work out of our Analytical Grammar books where we have just about finished our workbooks! We will still continue to work on identifying nouns, proper nouns, articles, adjectives, pronouns, prepositions, verbs, and adverbs within sentences. Spelling homework is due Friday.
MUM - This week we have moved into algebra. We will be working on finding the unknown number in a number sentence, input/output tables and rules, and writing a number sentence based on a word problem.

January 3-6

This Week's Academics
MUR - This week we will read the story "Prot and Krot." We will do several character and retell related activities throughout the week. Along with the story we will work out of our Wordly Wise books which focus on vocabulary. This week we will be starting Lesson 9. We will also work out of our Analytical Grammar books where we have just about finished our workbooks! We will still continue to work on indentifying nouns, proper nouns, articles, adjectives, pronouns, prepositions, verbs, and adverbs within sentences. Spelling homework is due Friday.

MUM - This week we will review concepts that students struggled with on the second interim that we took before break and also finish up with decimals. We need to review multiplying decimals and then start working on dividing decimals. Basic facts homework is due Friday!
History - This week we will be starting our Dynasties of China unit. The unit has a total of ten chapters and we will be spending the next two and a half weeks working through these chapters. The quiz will be on all ten chapters and will be given on January 18th (tentatively). There is NO at home project with this unit.
Writing - This week we will finish our final drafts of our Three Little Pigs stories. We will have a publishing party on Tuesday/Wednesday to share our published work. Next, we will be working on how to explain a process in writing. For example: directions on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Read Aloud - We are taking a break from our 4th grade Core Knowledge novels and reading the book "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen. Students are loving the adventure so far!
