This Week's Academics
MUR - This week we will dive into our first story of the year which is an excerpt from "Island of the Blue Dolphins." We will specifically work on the literary elements of author's purpose, genre, and point of view, along with strategies like predicting, making connections and summarizing. Along with the story we will work out of our Wordly Wise books which focus on vocabulary and also out of our Analytical Grammar books where we have already started working with nouns.
Spelling and Concept Question Board homework will come home Monday and is due Friday.  This will occur every week, unless we have a week that is shorter than 4 days.

MUM - This week we will continue to work on place value, number forms, comparing and ordering numbers, and move into number theory and estimation by the end of the week. Basic facts homework will come home on Monday and is due Friday. This will occur every week, unless we have a week that is shorter than 4 days.

Geography - This week we will wrap up our introductory unit on geography. We will finish up talking about longitude and latitude and finding places on a map using coordinates. We will also talk about US time zones and how to read physical maps.

Writing - This week we will be learning how to write friendly letters. We will start writing letters to our pen pals in Arizona! Students will learn all about the different components of a friendly letter and also how to address an envelope. We will also get into the first few lessons in our cursive handwriting books.

Read Aloud - I always start the year off reading "The Underneath" by Kathi Appelt.  It is a touching story and gets the kids hooked within the first few pages. Ask your kids about the book, they will have a LOT to tell you!
