This Week's Academics
MUR - This week we will be reading a fictional piece called "Charles" by Shirley Jackson. We will really be working on inferencing and retelling the story this week. Along with the story we will work out of our Wordly Wise books which focus on vocabulary and also out of our Analytical Grammar books where we have already started working with nouns, adjectives, and articles.
Spelling homework will be sent home on Monday and is due Friday. This will occur every week!
MUM - This week we will continue to work through multi-digit multiplication and start to work on long division. Long division is a HARD concept for students to learn and will take some time for students to master this skill. Most students have not mastered their facts higher than 5s. Memorizing their facts 6-9 will help them with the skills we will be working on the rest of the school year. Each student made flashcards for 6-9 in class last week that they should have brought home to work with. If you have not seen these flashcards, let me know!
Basic facts homework will be sent home on Monday and is due Friday.
Science -We will continue to work on our first science unit this week which is all about Meteorology. We will be learning specifically about tornadoes, hurricanes, thunder, lightning and forecasting.
The quiz for this unit will be on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7th. The study guide will be send home on Monday, October 3rd. All the answers can be found in their meteorology journal that we have created throughout the unit in class. There are also several handouts that students are keeping in their science folders that will help them study for the quiz.
Writing - This week we will learn about the 6+1writing trait VOICE. We will be writing a tribute poem that will demonstrate good voice by using specific words that create visual pictures for the reader and striking words and phrases that made the reader want to read more. We will continue to work in our cursive handwriting books and also review the basics of writing good sentences and paragraphs.
Read Aloud - We are reading the Core Knowledge Novel The Legend of Sleepy Hallow this week. This book contains four short stories. We will be reading The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle and then moving on to our next novel.
